Why Google Wallet is quietly cutting PayPal out

Google Wallet will discontinue support for PayPal payments in the US on June 13, 2025, requiring users to switch to credit or debit cards. The change, announced by Google on its help center page (via Android Authority), impacts users who have linked their PayPal accounts for payments.

Google ceased allowing users to link PayPal accounts to Wallet starting April 11th. Users previously utilizing PayPal for connecting payment methods must now manually add credit card, debit card, or bank information to continue using the app.

Google stated that PayPal-branded debit cards will still be accepted. In a FAQ, Google referenced an email sent by PayPal, stating, “To deliver smart, flexible, and more rewarding ways to pay, PayPal constantly improves their offerings.”

Google Wallet for kids will be out in 2025

For recurring payments via a linked PayPal account, Google advises users to update their payment method on the merchant’s website. PayPal transaction history will no longer be visible in Google Wallet and must be accessed through PayPal’s website or app. Google Wallet’s PayPal integration will continue to function for users in Germany.

PayPal initially introduced support for Google Wallet (formerly Android Pay) in 2017. The PayPal app recently added tap-to-pay functionality on iPhones in Germany and introduced a feature for group money pooling.
