Microsoft hits .4B in Q2 as Game Pass nears B

Microsoft announced substantial financial gains alongside significant organizational restructuring at their latest earnings call in July 2025. The technology corporation revealed a surge in revenue and operating income, despite a workforce reduction impacting numerous employees across various divisions.

Xbox Game Pass annual revenue reached nearly $5 billion, according to CEO Satya Nadella. This figure underscores the platform’s continued growth and contribution to Microsoft’s overall financial performance. Nadella also noted that Microsoft has 500 million active users across its gaming platforms.

The company experienced an 18 percent increase in overall revenue, totaling $76.4 billion. Operating income also saw a rise of 23 percent, reaching $34.3 billion. News of these financial results led to a more than seven percent increase in Microsoft’s stock value, solidifying its position as the world’s second-most valuable company, according to reports from The Guardian.

Nadella emphasized the role of cloud computing and artificial intelligence in driving business transformation. “Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector,” he stated. He further added, “We’re innovating across the tech stack to help customers adapt and grow in this new era, and this year, Azure surpassed $75bn in revenue, up 34 percent, driven by growth across all workloads.”

Nadella had previously affirmed the company’s strength and commitment to AI development. He described AI as a tool for empowerment, stating, “What does empowerment look like in the era of AI? It’s not just about building tools for specific roles or tasks. It’s about building tools that empower everyone to create their own tools. That’s the shift we are driving – from a software factory to an intelligence engine empowering every person and organisation to build whatever they need to achieve.”

The positive financial results coincided with the layoff of over 9000 employees earlier in July 2025. These layoffs affected several gaming divisions, resulting in the cancellation of projects such as Rare’s Everwild, The Initiative’s Perfect Dark reboot, and a new ZeniMax MMORPG. Additionally, approximately 200 employees from Candy Crush developer King were laid off. Reports indicate that these positions were potentially replaced by the AI tools they had helped develop. Microsoft addressed the layoffs in a statement to Eurogamer, citing the need to “position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace”.

Aside from the success of Game Pass, Microsoft has also seen success as a third-party publisher on PlayStation. The company published the majority of PlayStation’s top-selling games in the US over the past quarter. Titles included Forza Horizon 5, Doom: The Dark Ages, and The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered.
