Google is integrating Material 3 Expressive design elements into the profile section of its Messages application, according to Android Authority. This update, identified in an APK teardown of Google Messages v20250701 beta, introduces visual and interactive changes to the profile page interface. The implementation of Material 3 Expressive elements on profile buttons is currently undergoing testing.
The updated design for the profile section will feature buttons with altered shapes. These Expressive-style buttons incorporate tap animations, enhancing user interaction. Upon tapping, the buttons highlight and expand, reverting to their original shape when the user lifts their finger. This functionality is part of Google’s broader strategy to update applications with Material 3 Expressive elements in anticipation of the complete design language integration.
Android gets a radical new look with Material Three Expressive
While Android 16 has been released, the majority of its Material 3 Expressive changes are slated for the Android 16 QPR1 release, expected later in the year. Despite this, applications are being updated independently to align with the forthcoming design standards. Google has been progressively deploying the Material 3 Expressive redesign to users within its beta channel for Google Messages. The specific integration of these elements into the profile section represents an additional area receiving this design overhaul.
An APK teardown, which involves analyzing work-in-progress code, provides insights into potential future features. However, it does not guarantee that predicted features will be included in a public release. The current changes observed in Google Messages are not yet accessible to general users. The development signifies a continued effort by Google to standardize its application interfaces with the Material 3 Expressive design language.
