Google Messages users across various devices and carriers are reporting an ongoing issue where the application crashes upon opening, preventing direct access. Users affected can only respond to messages via notifications, message bubbles, or by initiating communication through their contacts list.
Reports detailing the crashing issue have surfaced on Reddit, as noted by 9to5Google. Affected users indicate that Google Messages version messages.android_20250805_00_RCO0.phone.openbeta dynamic is specifically experiencing these stability problems. User @snuggle92 stated, “I can reply to texts via notification and bubble, but if I open the app itself, everything crashes.” Another user, @gabbydawn26, expressed frustration, noting, “I literally can’t use my text messages unless someone texts me first or I go into my contacts and it’s so frustrating because I refuse to use the Samsung messaging app!”
The problem is not confined to a single device manufacturer or mobile carrier. Users of Google Pixel, Samsung, and Motorola devices have reported encountering the crash. Similarly, the issue has been observed across multiple carriers, including Fido, Google Fi, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
Several workarounds have been attempted by users. One individual reported resolving the issue by installing the beta version of Google Messages, subsequently exiting the beta program, and then reverting to the standard application version. However, this method did not prove effective for all users experiencing the problem. Additionally, clearing the application’s cache did not alleviate the crashing for affected individuals. A more consistently reported solution involves uninstalling the most recent Google Messages update and then reinstalling it; some users have found this procedure to resolve the crashing behavior.
Google has been contacted for clarification regarding the issue and to ascertain a timeline for a resolution.
