Google is expanding the functionalities of its Home app by integrating features previously exclusive to the legacy Nest application. This migration aims to consolidate smart home controls within a single platform, streamlining the user experience.
Recent updates include the rollout of temperature scheduling for older Nest thermostats within the Home app, a development initially highlighted by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority. This addition addressed a significant pain point for users who relied on the Nest app solely for temperature management of older devices.
Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Nest, confirmed that hot water controls are also slated for inclusion in an upcoming release. Kattukaran stated on X that the hot water control feature is currently in “final testing” and will be implemented in “one of our next few releases.” This announcement directly responded to user feedback expressing concerns about the absence of hot water control in the Home app and perceived shortcomings of the new scheduling interface relative to the Nest app.
P.S. I saw the comments on your article – hot water control is in final testing and will be going out in one of our next few releases! 🙂

The forthcoming hot water control will enable users to manage their water heating systems directly through the Home app. Functionalities include setting schedules for water heating, initiating a quick boost for immediate hot water access, and manually switching the system on or off. The availability of these features is contingent on the compatibility of the user’s thermostat and hot water system.
The integration of hot water controls signifies a further step toward Google’s objective of unifying its smart home ecosystem within the Home app. By migrating essential features from the Nest app, Google intends to minimize reliance on the legacy platform and provide a more cohesive and user-friendly control interface for its smart home devices.
